Augustus John’s painting of cellist Suggia has a new life

I was doing a music video shoot a couple of weeks ago for a duo piece by the wonderful composer and flute player Katrina Emtage who wrote "Wind on Waves" for cello and bass flute. It was made by award winning producer Shaun O'Connor. (some great photos from the shoot are on his site)

The amazing outfits were made by designer Lisa Zagone. As I sat there being filmed it struck me in such a dress I was an embodiment of the Augustus John painting of Portugese cellist Guilhermina Suggia so I asked Shaun to take a photo of me to recreate the image.

I'm looking forward to seeing the end product of the shoot. Part of it I was lying in a pool of icy water, of course it was the coldest day of the year despite winter being officially over… and there was no hot water in the taps. I can tell you it was agony for arts sake…

Nigel Kennedy plays trad. duo with Ilse!

A friend sent me a video from her phone today. She was at the City of Cork Symphony orchestra concert in the Limerick University Concert Hall where we played with Nigel Kennedy.

He started playing a trad tune and I couldn't resist joining in. We played a trad set again the next night in the City Hall in Cork, to more rapturous applause and afterwards had a great jam along with Cora Venus Lunny, Donovan and other CCSO improvisers!

Take a look & listen

The Socrates Project

I went into the studio a couple of weeks ago with composer/guitarist Fergal O'Connor and violinist Tom Crowley and we came up with some cool string parts for this soundtrack, check it out! I'm looking forward to reading the book, hopefully it's as fun as we had jamming in Claycastle Studios! Afterwards we went for the most moody winter walk along Youghal beach as the light was draining from the clouds. Very atmospheric to match the music…

New Christmas Sheet Music Available!

I am very pleased to announce the publication of my new e book, Christmas Carols for Solo Cello available on my store website playcellomusic.com

Eleven Christmas Carols and Songs from around the world arranged especially for solo cello.

This Christmas music comes from all over the world. American, Irish, Brazilian, German, English and Welsh songs.  The origins of some of the older carols is unknown as they have been around so long. There are enough technical challenges to keep it interesting but easy enough for you to get the music up to a performance standard by Christmas.

Contents:

  1. It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
  2. White Christmas
  3. The Holly and the Ivy
  4. Deck the Hall
  5. Winter Wonderland
  6. Walking in the Air
  7. Natal Das Criancas
  8. Christmas Medley: Let it Snow, Santa Clause is Coming to Town, Jingle Bells
  9. In Dulci Jubilo
  10. Wexford Carol
  11. Oiche Nollag

Spread some Christmas cheer with these pieces and don’t be surprised if everyone sings along.

I have had a great response to the music and performed some in the beautiful lounge at Sheen Falls Lodge last evening.

I am recording them this week and the recordings will be available for download soon too.

Enjoy!!

Custom House, Cork

I performed a solo cello concert at Custom House in Cork for the Windle Club on sunny Thursday. Afterwards I was treated to a delicious lunch around the corner at the Brasserie.

The Custom House was designed by William Hargrave in 1881 and built at Custom House Street between the north and south channels of the River Lee.  At the time its main work dealt with inland revenue.  In 1904 the Cork Harbour Commissioners took over the building on a 999 year lease.

Custom House Cork

The magnificently ornate boardroom, where I performed was added to the building in 1906 and was designed by William Price, the then Harbour Engineer.

Nigel Kennedy

I was just sent photos from the concert the Cork Symphony Orchestra played with Nigel Kennedy. I was lucky enough to play a duet of a couple of trad tunes with him in the University of Limerick CH and the Cork City Hall. Nigel is a beautiful player and alot of fun to play with!

Dido and Aeneas review

Dido and Aeneas

Cork Opera House

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Henry Purcell can never have imagined how his opera Dido and Aeneas would be re-invented by director John O’Brien in this daring production, first presented at Cork Opera House in February 2011.

O’Brien has Cara O’Sullivan play Dido and her mirror image, the Sorceress, Simon Morgan play Aeneas, the Sailor and the Spirit, and Majella Cullagh and Mary Hegarty double up as Sharon and Belinda and the Witches.

But O’Brien doesn’t stop there: he also has the musicians — Marja Gaynor, Carolyn Goodwin, Ilse de Ziah and Piia Pakrinen — on stage throughout, weaving in and out of the action as they perform. By paring back the cast, O’Brien has created a production as tight as can be: over the course of an hour, there isn’t a single moment wasted.

This is as much a visual feast as it is a musical one. Lisa Zagone’s Gothic costumes are stunning, and no-one will forget the ‘baby’ the characters squabble over, which looks like something created for a horror movie. In the course of the production, Dido’s throne is first transformed into a bed, and then the prow of a ship. A series of what look like giant shards of glass hang over the stage, and at one point, a full moon looms in the background.

Purcell’s original score, from 1689, has been re-orchestrated by Marja Gaynor, who, true to the spirit of the production, plays violin, viola, autoharp and melodica. The singing throughout is flawless, with Cara O’Sullivan, in particular, being suitably regal.
