Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin concert

I played in a lovely concert as part of the Clonmel junction festival last Friday. We played Madison’s descent by By Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin
A choral suite for piano, choir, chamber orchestra, solo voice and saxophone.
There was a standing ovation at the end of the concert and I enjoyed chatting to the audience members before the cross country drive home through the dark hills!
Featuring
Piano: Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin
Conductor: Fergus Sheil
Saxophone: Kenneth Edge
Soprano: Claudia Boyle
The Clonmel Junction Festival Choir
The Carolan Chamber Orchestra

The Clonmel Festival choristers will join Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, a 14 piece chamber orchestra and the soloists to perform Ó Súilleabháin’s choral suite “Madison’s Descent”. Together, under the baton of Fergus Sheil, they will bring us on a very special adventure.
Madison’s Descent is artist Paige Allen’s impression of the journey a soul makes to its birth. Inspired by this story Ó Súilleabháin has composed this textured and moving choral suite, which receives its European Premiere in Junction Festival.
The performance of Madison’s Descent will be preceded by a short recital by Ó Súilleabháin with the Carolan Chamber Orchestra of some of his favourite compositions.

New single available on bandcamp

Soilse in Darkness is a strong, intense and exciting piece. It is dark, with a powerful surging light shining through.
During a dark and intense tropical thunderstorm I was jamming with a tabla player in Sydney. We were working with Indian rhythms that he learned during his time in India. In the session I created a melody I called "Ode to a Tabla" I have bedded the melody in Soilse in Darkness, along with a heavy metal inspired melody and rhythm, and a Celtic nod. The left hand plays pizzicato with the third finger whilst stopping the melody line with the other fingers. I also call the piece Solace in Darkness. Soilse in Darkness means "lights in darkness" Soilse means "lights" in Irish and pronounced a bit like Sweelsha…and I like that my name is in the word…

Reverbnation Charts

Reverbnation Charts

Even if charts are not so important these days (especially as to reach the top you usually have to pay) I was happy to see I have reached No. 2 in the Folk charts for Cork on reverbnation! If everyone goes and has a quick listen there, I may even reach number 1!

I am working on new arrangements for trad Irish tunes and will put them up for sale on playcellomusic.com soon. I'm working towards putting out my next Celtic Cello CD.

After some requests I made a tutorial of College Groves, so incase anyone wants some extra help have a look… there were sync problems as it was a trial of another system which would be easier, but no it doesn't work. I will be doing a series of tutorials, in sync, and a little clearer… so feel free to give me any feedback on the pieces you'd like for this or comments etc.

I've put the original youtube clip of College Groves here too.
