City of Cork Symphony Orchestra
Fantastic concert at the Opera House last week, including the young Mairead Hickey playing Tchaikovsky violin concerto.
" The Opera House attracted a big crowd for A Russian Evening with Tchaikovsky, a performance by the City of Cork Symphony Orchestra. The genial enthusiastic conductor Keith Pascoe has welded this orchestra into a cohesive, sometimes brilliant unit and the quality of the playing was superb". Irish Examiner

meanwhile…upthebackpaddock
My brother in law John Plankenhorn is a composer living in Australia, and my trio Ozmosis comissioned a piece from him. He wrote meanwhile… as a series of six vignettes to be placed between pieces in the concert, like a little aside… they were very tricky to rehearse although most under a minute… have a listen!
City of Cork Symphony Orchestra Cellos
I organised the City of Cork Symphony Orchestra to host a coffee hour in the Cork Opera House Foyer today. We started playing inside to a happy crowd, but as the weather was cracking, we ended up outside, instruments roasting in the sun not so good, but we had a lot of fun! We played my arrangement of White Stripes Seven Nation Army for 5 cellos (We had Fin the viola player being an honorary cellist), as well as an Irish 'ramble with the lass' I composed, Nothing Else Matters from Metallica, then we continued outside with Creeping Death, also Metallica.

Rachel Podger Concert
Beautiful concert at the Cork School of music last night, Rachel Podger on Baroque violin, Pamela Thorby on recorders with Malcolm Proud harpsichord. Rachel's violin playing is sublime. The smooth sound from her exquisitely controlled bow was wonderful to hear. The highlight was her rendition of Sonata No. 3 in E by J. S. Bach It's all in the bow, and keeping all the joints in the arm supple. Her arm was fluid and the sound was fluid. Flexible means you can change direction, speed, texture at any moment and can react to any musical impulse. Rachel says:
"If you're going to get anywhere in this business, you've got to have something special to sell, but if that's not the music, then I'm not interested."
